Research & Assessment Grant
The MAC Research & Assessment Committee provides grant funding
for research projects that promote and stimulate excellence in the field
of health science librarianship. If you have an idea for a research
project, our committee invites you to apply for a Research and
Assessment Grant. MAC/MLA may award more than one grant in a year.
Funding Amount
Grantees are typically awarded $2000 for one year. There is the
potential for an increase in this funding, but would require a detailed
budget and approval not only of the MAC Research and Assessment
Committee but also MAC Executive Board.

Eligibility
- The primary applicant must be a current member of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Medical Library Association (MACMLA).
- Applicants must hold or be pursuing a graduate degree in library science, information science, or a related field.
- Student members must identify a practicing health sciences librarian
or library school faculty member as a project sponsor. Sponsors do not
need to be MACMLA members.
Preference is given to practicing health sciences librarians and current library science students.
AHIP Points
The Medical Library Association runs the Academy of Health
Information Professionals (AHIP) certification program. Receiving a
funded grant can earn you points toward this certification.
Principal investigators and co-investigators can claim 10 points for
the first year of a funded grant. Key personnel can claim 5 points for
the first year of a funded grant.

Grant Terms
Grants may be used to support all or part of the costs of a project,
such as for research participant incentives, research supplies, or
dissemination costs.
Awarding of the Grant
- More than one grant may be awarded in a year, depending on the
amount available for the grant, and the number and cost of approved
applications.
- Grants are generally given to the grant recipient’s institution in
order to prevent the grant from being considered taxable income for the
recipient. Individuals interested in applying should consult with the
grant or sponsored program offices at their institution in advance of
applying to confirm any institution requirements.
- Depending on the review of the received applications, the Committee may recommend that awards not be presented in a given year.
Reporting on Grant Project
- Recipients of the award will provide a required one-page progress
report to the MAC RAC committee approximately six months after funds are
dispersed.
- The MAC RAC committee will correspond with previous grant winners to
track presentations and publications resulting from grant funds.
- Grant winners are encouraged to present their findings as either a paper or poster presentation at the MACMLA annual meeting.
- Recognition of MACMLA’s support must be given in any publications originating from this project.
